Havia um pobre homem que ganhava a vida recolhendo ovos dos penhascos. Certa manhã ele saiu para sua perigosa jornada e, olhando para baixo da beira do penhasco, viu uma saliência que se projetava da rocha abaixo, coberta com pilhas de ninhos de aves. Amarrando sua corda a uma árvore que havia próxima à borda, foi descendo pouco a pouco até chegar à saliência da rocha. Em sua ânsia por conseguir os ovos, ele soltou a corda por onde descera – e ela balançou para longe de seu alcance!
Ali estava ele naquela estreita saliência de rocha; acima dele uma parede com uma altura impossível de se escalar e sob seus pés, as ondas do mar castigando os recifes. Quando a corda voltou em seu balanço vindo em sua direção, em desespero ele esticou o corpo todo e, pela graça de Deus, conseguiu alcançar a corda uma fração de segundo antes que ela se afastasse dele para sempre. Abalado e trêmulo, subiu até a segurança do topo do penhasco.
Podemos imaginar o perigo em que aquele homem se encontrava; será que podemos imaginar o perigo em que nós mesmos nos encontramos? Estamos na estreita beirada da vida; sobre nós está uma montanha de culpa que não temos condições de escalar; sob nós fica o horrível abismo de uma morte sem fim. Mas existe uma corda balançando sobre nós – uma corda forte e segura, capaz de nos içar para o alto e nos colocar em segurança. Se não nos agarrarmos a ela, como escaparemos? Se existissem outros meios de sermos salvos, ou outros métodos pelos quais pudéssemos ser reconciliados Àquele em cujas mãos nosso destino está colocado, talvez existisse, de nossa parte, alguma razão para rejeitar a solução que a Palavra de Deus revela. Porém não há. “Porque ninguém pode pôr outro fundamento além do que já está posto, o qual é Jesus Cristo”. 1 Coríntios 3:11.
Esta grande e gloriosa salvação é oferecida gratuitamente a você. Por que não vai a Cristo para receber vida? A porta da misericórdia está aberta agora mesmo e a voz do Salvador lhe chama. Está aberta agora, mas quem pode garantir até quando? Não ficará assim para sempre. Nem se garante que ficará aberta por mais alguns dias. O Espírito Santo diz: “Hoje, se ouvirdes a sua voz, Não endureçais os vossos corações… Porque todo aquele que invocar o nome do SENHOR será salvo.” (Hebreus 4:7; Romanos 10:13).

There was once a poor man who earned his living by gathering eggs along the rocky cliffs. One morning he went out on his dangerous errand and, looking down from the summit, he saw a ledge jutting out from the rock below covered with a cluster of birds’ nests. He fastened his rope to a tree which stood near the edge, and then gradually let himself down to the edge of the rock. In his eagerness to gather the eggs he let go of the rope by which he had descended – and it swung out of his reach!
There he stood on that narrow ledge of rock; above him was a height he had no hope of scaling, below him the waves of the ocean crashing on the rocks. As the rope swung towards him, in desperation he sprang upwards and by God’s mercy he caught hold of the rope in the split second before it escaped his reach forever. Shaken and trembling, he drew himself to the summit and safety.
We can all realize the danger of that man’s position; can we realize our own? We stand on the narrow ledge of life; above us is a mountain of guilt we have no power to scale; below us is the fearful abyss of unending death. But there is a rope hanging over us – a rope strong and sure, able to bear us up and land us safely. If we do not grasp it, how shall we escape? If there were some other means by which we could be saved, or some other method by which we could be reconciled to Him in whose hands our destinies are placed, there might be some reason on our part for rejecting the remedy which God’s Word reveals. But there is none. “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11
This great and glorious salvation is freely offered to you. Will you not come to Christ that you may have life? Now the door of mercy stands open and the voice of the Saviour calls. Now, but who can say how long? Not forever. Not even, it may be, for many days more. As the Holy Sprit says, “Today, if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Hebbrews 4:7; Romans 10:13
