À medida que o Furacão Mitch se fortalecia tornando-se um perigoso furacão Categoria 5 com ventos permanentes de 180 mph (273 km/h), os meteorologistas diziam que era impossível dizer onde a tormenta potencialmente catastrófica iria atingir a terra. Eles estavam certos, porém, de que o Mitch não perderia nem um pouco de sua tenacidade até atingir a terra. A tempestade mostrou ser muito mais poderosa que o Georges que matou mais de 500 pessoas após atravessar o leste do Caribe e o Golfo do México.
O Furacão Mitch, parecia seguir o Furacão Georges em seu caminho de destruição quando cortou o norte do Caribe em direção a Florida Keys, é uma das grandes tempestades ao redor do mundo que recebem diversos nomes – furacão, tufão e ciclone. O ciclone Justin que atravessou a costa Australiana em 1997 foi assim. Eu estava lá quando ele chegou.
Previsão do Tempo
O Centro de Previsão do Tempo estava acompanhando este ciclone por três semanas. Ele surgiu no Mar de Coral como uma das maiores formações já vistas. Durante o tempo em que foi acompanhado pelos instrumentos de verificação do clima, ele derramou chuvas intensas em todo o norte do Mar de Coral, ultrapassando a marca de dois metros em alguns lugares. Então perdeu sua intensidade e vagou devagar em direção à Nova Guiné. Nas águas mais quentes dos trópicos ele tomou fôlego e cresceu em intensidade tomando a direção da costa Australiana. Ventos fortes nas camadas superiores tosaram seu topo quando já atingia 20 quilômetros de altura, carregando a maior parte da chuva forte para longe da Nova Guiné. Mas ele continuou vindo, renovando suas forças à medida que avançava.
Esperando
Eu estava esperando por ele, imaginando se aquela formação iria nos atingir ou se desviar da costa. Os satélites e radares meteorológicos que monitoram o clima continuavam a acompanhar seu progresso enquanto seguia resoluto em direção à costa. Todos os habitantes da costa foram avisados para tomarem precauções, preparando-se para um possível choque com aquele imprevisível fenômeno do clima. Certamente a eletricidade seria cortada.
Ciclone Justin
Depois de um período em que ventos de sudeste sopraram cada vez mais forte, às 11 horas da manhã de Sábado o ciclone Justin nos atingiu. Foi uma sensação estranha como se estivéssemos sendo esmagados por ventos violentos, e então, de repente, nos encontramos no olho da tempestade. Durante uma hora ficamos no olho do ciclone que tinha 20 quilômetros de diâmetro, enquanto este passava sobre nós.
No Olho da Tormenta
Que experiência incrível! O clima havia se tornado calmo, apenas com algumas brisas fracas ocasionais. Acima de nossas cabeças podíamos ver um clima de ventos selvagem com nuvens turbulentas cruzando o céu em cerca de um minuto, de um horizonte ao outro. Acima de nós e ao nosso redor tudo era violência, turbulência e destruição, mas durante uma hora permanecemos no olho da tempestade. Andei pela rua. Não havia chuva, nada denotava a fúria que havia caído sobre nós apenas uns minutos antes. Somente folhas, escombros e árvores caídas provavam que um ciclone havia mesmo passado por ali.
Violento Outra Vez
Então o clima revelou outro fato estranho. As nuvens foram ficando mais lentas, pararam por um breve período, e então mudaram de direção. O clima se mostrava violento outra vez e os ventos uivavam na direção oposta, mais fortes do que antes.
Tempestades em Nossa Vida
Aquilo tudo falou forte no meu coração. Estar no olho da tempestade foi algo especial. Enquanto estava ali, observando o clima calmo, sabia que a poucos quilômetros, em todo o meu redor, a tempestade atingia seu grau máximo, mas para mim naquela hora havia calma. Na vida, às vezes temos que suportar climas ferozes e difíceis. A vida tem muitas tempestades com ventos ferozes e ficamos sujeitos a danos, além das feridas que podem deixar em nós. Podemos passar por distúrbios e nossa vida pode se tornar endurecida, amarga ou ferida por tudo isso. As tempestades podem até chegar a ser demais para podermos suportá-las.
Calma na Tempestade
Existe uma calma que todo ser humano pode conhecer no meio das tempestades da vida. Existe algo de muito especial no descanso e paz que Jesus pode dar. Quando tudo ao seu redor estiver tempestuoso e o clima ruim desta vida atravessar o seu caminho, você pode encontrar a calma e a paz no amor de Deus. Aquela calma que Deus dá é como estar no protegido centro das tempestades da vida.
Sobre Águas Turbulentas
Existe um exemplo muito bom de descanso em calma sobre águas turbulentas, ou de se passar por sobre os elementos em convulsão gozando de paz. Este exemplo é visto em um homem que viveu há muito tempo chamado Noé. O mundo havia se tornado tão mau e injusto que a destruição caiu sobre ele, mas Noé era um homem de fé. Ele creu na palavra de Deus que havia prometido que ele seria salvo da tempestade. Enquanto o juízo de Deus se abatia ao redor de Noé ele estava protegido na Arca que Deus providenciara. Aquela Arca ou barco flutuava por sobre as tribulações. Era aquela a calma providenciada por Deus no meio da tempestade.

Você deseja o lugar de calma nas tempestades da vida? Este lugar tão especial está disponível para você. Jesus disse, “Vinde a Mim, todos os que estais cansados e oprimidos, e Eu vos aliviarei. Tomai sobre vós o Meu jugo, e aprendei de Mim, que sou manso e humilde de coração; e achareis descanso para as vossas almas”.1 Se você crer nAquele que morreu na cruz para salvar você, esse lugar de segurança e calma será também a sua porção, em Jesus Cristo, o Senhor.

As Hurricane Mitch strengthened into a dangerous Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 180 mph (273 km/h), forecasters said it was impossible to tell where the potentially catastrophic storm would make landfall. They were certain, however, Mitch would not lose any of its tenacity until striking land. The storm showed to be much more powerful than Georges, which killed more than 500 people after it swept through the eastern Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
Hurricane Mitch, seemed to follow Hurricane Georges on its path of destruction when it sliced through the northern Caribbean toward the Florida Keys, is one of the great storms around the world that are called by many names – hurricane, typhoon and cyclone. These weather events can be among the most powerful forces in nature. These great disturbances in the weather pattern are caused when warm tropical air begins to rise causing a circular rotation of winds. Cyclone Justin that crossed the Australian coast in 1997 was one of these. I was there when it came.
Weather Forecast
The Weather Bureau had been tracking this cyclone for over three weeks. It developed in the Coral Sea as one of the biggest systems ever known. During the time it was being tracked by weather instruments, it drenched the whole northern Coral Sea with rainfalls of more than two meters (6-7 feet) in places. Then it lost intensity and slowly drifted towards New Guinea. In the hotter waters of the tropics it reformed and grew in intensity, and cut a course for the Australian coast. Strong upper level winds sheared the top right off it when it had been 20 km high, and carried most of the heavy rain off to New Guinea. But still it kept coming, reforming itself as it advanced.
Waiting
I was waiting, wondering if this system would hit us or veer away from the coast. Weather satellites and radar continued to monitor its progress as it tracked steadily towards the coast. All the coastal inhabitants had been warned to take precautions and prepare for a possible encounter with this unpredictable weather storm. Almost certainly the electricity would be cut.
Cyclone Justin
Violent south-east winds had been blowing with increasing intensity for some time and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Cyclone Justin hit us. It was one of the strangest feelings to be smashed around by violent winds, then rather suddenly, to be in the eye of the storm. For one hour we were in the cyclone’s eye which was 20 km across as it passed over the top of us.
In The Eye of The Storm
What an experience! Now the weather had become calm with only occasional gentle breezes. Overhead you could see the wild weather with raging clouds racing across the sky in only about a minute, from horizon to horizon. Above and around, there was violence and turmoil and destruction but for one hour, we were in the eye of the storm. I walked around outside. There was no rain, no hint of the fury we had had just some minutes beforehand. Only debris and leaves and fallen trees proved that there was a cyclone indeed.
Violent Again
Then a strange weather fact happened. The clouds slowed, became still just for a short time, then they changed direction. The weather became violent again and the winds howled from the opposite direction, stronger than before.
Storms in Our Lives
That really spoke to me. Being in the eye of the storm was special. As I stood there watching the calm weather, I knew that only a few kilometers out, all around me, the storm was at its worst, but for me in that one hour, there was calm. Sometimes in life we have to weather pretty hard and fierce conditions. Life has many storms with fierce winds and much personal damage and hurt can be done to us. There can be much personal turmoil and our lives can become hard or bitter and hurt. The storms can almost be too much to bear.
Calm in The Storm
There is a calm that every human being can know in the midst of life’s storms. There is something very special about resting in the peace and calm that Jesus can give. When it is rough around you and the terrible weather of life comes your way, you can seek that calm and peace found in God’s love. That calmness God gives is like being in the sheltered eye of the storms of life.
Over Troubled Waters
There is a very fitting example of resting in calm over troubled waters, or riding the wild elements in peace. It is found in a man of long ago called Noah. The world had become so bad and unjust that destruction came upon it but Noah was a man of faith. He trusted God’s word that promised he would be saved from the storm. While the judgment of God raged all around Noah he was sheltered in the Ark that God had provided. That Ark or boat floated above the trials. That was the calm of God’s provision in the midst of the storm.
Do You Want Peace?
Are you wanting the place of calm in life’s storms? That special place is available for you. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.”1 If you trust the One who died on the cross to save you, that calm and safe place will also be your portion, in Jesus Christ, the Lord.
